(from Fine Gardening magazine, Nov.-Dec. 2004)
Materials: 2-3 foot long rebar or dowel the size of a broom handle, wooden finial, construction glue, if not already attached-hangar bolt, drill-if needed, rust-inhibiting paint 1. If using rebar--remove hangar bolt and use the hole as a pilot hole to drill a hole the diameter of the rebar. Apply a dab of glue to one end of the rebar and insert it into the hole in the finial. Let glue dry and paint with rust inhibiting paint. 2. If using dowel or broom handle--drill pilot hole into center of top diameter. Apply a dab of glue and screw the finial into the dowel. Let glue dry and paint as desired. **These are way sturdier than the cheap plastic short hose guides you find available at the store. They are more attractive as well.**
